If a Direct Debit Instruction has been cancelled, you're able to reinstate it (so that you retain the same Bacs Reference) in two ways:
Requesting your payer to reinstate the DDI themselves (via the bank)
Your payer is able to reinstate their cancelled Direct Debit directly with their bank. When this is processed, you will be notified via an ADDACS Report displaying reason code 'R'. The SmartDebit system will then automatically be updated to show this Direct Debit as live.
Reinstating the DDI yourself
- If you possess your own Service User Number (also known as BANK SUN)
If you own your SUN, you are able reinstate a cancelled Direct Debit via the SmartDebit system. You are able to do this by clicking on the orange "Reinstate Payer" button which you will see within the system if the payer is cancelled.
To reduce the risk of indemnity claims, we strongly advise you to request a new, signed Direct Debit Instruction, dated after the original Direct Debit was cancelled. There is no need to send SmartDebit a copy of the instruction, however we suggest keeping hold of it for audit purposes.
- If you possess a Service User Number which is provided by SmartDebit (also known as FM Sun)
If your SUN is managed (i.e. provided to you by SmartDebit), you will need to send a copy of a newly completed Direct Debit Instruction (DDI) to email@example.com requesting us to reinstate the cancelled Direct Debit and we will confirm via email once this has been completed. Please ensure that the new DDI is dated after the cancellation date. Any amendments to the Direct Debit will need to be done you once you have received confirmation from us that it is live.

- If the payer is reinstating, their bank can only reinstate a Direct Debit in the first two months of it being cancelled, any later they will need to request that you action this on their behalf.
- If your payer's details or bank account need updating, once reinstated, click to edit these details, make the amendment and ensure you save any changes.
